Big Little Things Coming

by mikejhamilton on March 28, 2011

Well in less than 20 weeks I will become a dad. The more I reflect on this the more strange it feels to me. Don’t get me wrong, I am super excited. My wife and I have been together for more than 8 years and we have always said that we wanted children, and me personally have always known I wanted to be a dad. Now that it is almost here though…phew.

Everyday it seems more and more real, and I guess I just don’t want to mess up. In reality I am pretty sure I will be ok, all my calculations have led me to only a 5% chance that I really mess the kid up.

But no matter how much the nervousness racks up, I must say excitement is also growing in correlation.

I would like to admit a few things I am realizing as I reflect and in the interest of self disclosure things I must improve by august.

1. I have to get better about house work, I can take the lazy route and I want to make My wife’s life easier and pull my weight. (this has been a challenge with the broken leg, but I am prepping my mindset for the future :) )

2. I am a bigger guy, I am going to change that. I started weight watchers this week, and will start working out once I can, but I want to be healthy and active with my child.

(maybe because I am writing these down I will hold myself more accountable)

When all is said and done I am very excited for my first child and can’t wait until August, and I have a feeling this child is going to have a very high social media presence.

Anyone have any tips or advice? Anyone with experience raising a child on a college campus want to weigh in?

I will be the first to admit that I am one that should practice what I Apreach just a little bit more. What do mean by this? Well, I present often on the benefits of social media and technology, yet my personal usage can be chalked up to sporadic at best as of late. My [...]

No Where to Go

Well last night in the most graceful way possible I definitely fell as I was heading out of the office and as a result broke my fibula (bone on the outside of my left leg and tore the tendons in my ankle).  A nice trip to the ER and two attempts to set it into [...]

The Presentation Must Have

Since March 2010 I have been incorporating a a twitter back channel to most of my conference presentations.  It is effortless; create a hashtag (i.e. #wpira, #neacuhoSM, #neacurhADV) and point people in the direction to use it.  Now for most of the past 7 months I have been using these presentations to try to prove [...]

#sachat Appreciation

by Mike Hamilton October 11, 2010

I’ve been consistently telling colleagues and SA professionals that I am presenting to that I believe #sachat to be one of the best professional development opportunity available.  It is a statement that I wholeheartedly believe.  Between January 2007 and February 2010  I tried twitter 4 times, under different names and for varied reasons.  I could not find [...]

Branding Your Office

by Mike Hamilton October 7, 2010

My first question for you is, do you have an “office brand”?  If the answer is, “no” “sort of” or “i think so”, then  you may feel that creating a uniform “brand” for your office is overwhelming or daunting.   You may even be asking why?  Well for those of us in Residence Life, at [...]

Are You Using Twitter’s “Who to Follow”?

by Mike Hamilton August 8, 2010

Have you logged into you twitter.com page recently?  For me I typically use tweetdeck on my desktop and twitter(tweetie 2) for iPhone, and I do not go into my actual twitter account.  This may change as twitter’s new “Who to Follow” option in the sidebar seems to be pretty fantastic.  I read a post on techcrunch [...]

#GrillJenna Transcript and Video

by Mike Hamilton August 5, 2010

So I was sitting here at my apartment in Worcester, MA when I got the bright idea that it would be fun to do a live mock interview with @jennamagnuski.  @jmayojr handled the social feed. I made the camera and tech happen, but it was all Jenna, who chatted for about 1 hours and answered [...]

The Art of the @

by Mike Hamilton August 2, 2010

Your whole identity on twitter is tied the to the @ symbol. When you check your “mentions”you are checking how many times someone has typed @yourname. This “shift 2″ key tethers you to the twitter world. Now I want to talk a little bit about what the @ symbol does in twitter. First, when used [...]
