Stints of Social Media

by mikejhamilton on March 26, 2011

I will be the first to admit that I am one that should practice what I Apreach just a little bit more.

What do mean by this? Well, I present often on the benefits of social media and technology, yet my personal usage can be chalked up to sporadic at best as of late. My goal is to figure out why this is.

Some observations I have made in the last half of the year.

- BLOGGING I have ideas, tons of ideas, my execution is highly lacking. So for me my goal for the next month (yes I am going to set short term goals) is to write a post at least once a week.

-TWITTER I hop on and hop off. I am always lurking, but have rarely engaged or participated in community chats like #sachat lately. I have a personal problem with this. I often preach to others that twitter is the place to be, yet I often neglect interacting there. I give a very special shout out to Teri Bump @tbump, because she is amazing at “checking up” via Direct message and has really made me think about how absent I been.

-FACEBOOK honestly twitter replaced Facebook for me over a year ago, especially when I realized the professional capabilities of twitter. I still use fb occasionally but more for personal and fan page needs than anything else.

Ultimately i am, as always, responsible for my social media presence. And I am calling myself out for being lacking. I have goals to get back involved more, and I am putting it in writing to hold myself accountable. Hopefully my new iPad will help out (wrote this post with it, so formatting is off)

Have you had social media lulls? What have you done to kick it into gear?

I have stopped using Facebook; I only login when I receive an e-mail that I have been specifically tagged, mentioned, or sent a message. And I don’t feel at all bad about this because I know that I stopped using it because it was not meeting my needs.

I come and go on twitter depending on how busy my day or week is. I, too, rely mainly on twitter and only occasionally use Facebook. I am immeasurably better because of the relationships built through the twitter communities.

I am totally with you here. Clearly with my comment being late I do not keep up with blogs well, I find twitter to be much more satisfying. I don’t spend enough time reading through the blogs that I have through google reader, it is just not a habit I have been able to develop. My goal is to get better too, as I know there are some awesome conversations happening in the blogosphere. Twitter is on my phone, so it’s easier to glance at during the day, and conversations are more easily managed!
